The research problem is formulated as follows: Should deaf children aged 3 to 5 be taught to read and write? The general objective is to analyze a lesson plan developed by a graduate of the Bilingual Education program at the State University of Pará, designed for teaching deaf children. The specific objectives are to describe the lesson plan developed by a deaf graduate of the Bilingual Education program and to analyze the didactic content based on three categories: a) conception of childhood; b) conception of language; and c) conception of literacy. This is a dialogic study based on the theoretical frameworks of Manuel Pinto and Manuel Jacinto Sarmento (1997) regarding the conception of childhood; Wanderley Giraldi (2006) regarding the conception of language; and Magda Soares regarding the conception of literacy. The study is carried out in six steps: (1) identification of a graduate of the bilingual education program who wishes to participate in the research; (2) establishment of a social network where communication in sign language can take place; (3) request for a teaching activity with children using visual methods; (4) conducting interviews to clarify any questions; (5) transcription of the activities into written Portuguese; (5) presentation of the conclusions to the student and joint discussion on how to improve the activity. The results of the analysis indicated that the child is viewed as an adult’s project, the plan is oriented toward an instrumental conception of language, and literacy still centers on the traditional teaching method, based on the transmission of decontextualized Portuguese words.PPGED - Saberes culturais e educação na Amazônia
