The objective was to investigate the distribution of bryophyte communities in a chronosequence in Caxiuanã National Forest, Pará, Brazil. The biological material was collected in forests of different succession stages according to the age of regeneration: Stage I (0 - 10), Stage II (10 - 25), Stage III (> 25) and Stage IV (primary forest). We tested difference in density, richness and species composition between the stages, also tested the possible occurrence of indicator species. We also classify the species according to tolerance guild to sunlight and substrate colonization. The species composition was the variable that best contributed to understand the distribution of the bryophyte community throughout the successional stages. Eight species are indicator of the succession phases and, throughout the stages, generalist species predominated, there was reduction in richness of sun specialists and increase in shade specialists. We also believed that the microclimatic conditions and the structure of the forests can influence in substrates availability and quality, consequently the colonization of bryophytes in different stages.PPGCA - Estudos de ecossistemas amazônicos
