Jansen) supply chain in the Belém (PA) Metropolitan Area: production and commercialization of an Amazonian agri-food systemTeseCiências Agrárias::Engenharia AgrícolaThis thesis analyzed the jambu production chain in the Metropolitan Region of Belém, in the State of Pará (RMB/PA), identifying the characteristics of small producers and the challenges they face, the main markets and marketing channels, as well as the behavior and price trends of this vegetable. Three studies were developed in the form of articles based on the specific objectives of the thesis. Article 1, with a qualitative approach, aimed to analyze the production chain of small jambu producers who supply the RMB/PA, identifying the social actors involved, their socioeconomic profile, the characteristics of the production system, and the challenges faced by this category. The data were collected through bibliographic, documentary, and field research, with interviews conducted with 22 small jambu producers in the region. Article 2, with a qualitative approach, aimed to identify the main markets and marketing channels for jambu in the RMB/PA, seeking to demonstrate the challenges faced in marketing and the main differences between market types. In addition to bibliographic and documentary research and non-participant observation, interviews were conducted with 22 small producers, three entrepreneurs, two nutritionists, and two representatives of small producer cooperatives in the RMB/PA. Article 3, with a quantitative approach, aimed to analyze the behavior and trend of jambu prices and estimate the seasonal price indices for this product in the period from 2000 to 2024 in the Belém market. In addition, we also sought to estimate the price differences for the production of jambu leaves and flowers, identifying which is more advantageous to produce. The data used to calculate prices were provided by the Pará State Supply Center, and data on leaf and flower production were obtained from small jambu producers in the region. Based on the three articles developed, it was concluded that the main jambu producers in the region surveyed are small peri-urban producers who also produce other vegetables associated with jambu, seeking mainly higher income levels. It was also found that jambu has a short supply chain, with at most one intermediary between producers and consumers, who face challenges due to the lack of agricultural research, technical assistance, and availability of inputs to strengthen the production chain. This vegetable is mainly sold fresh in local markets and other nearby locations. In addition, it was found that jambu prices vary significantly throughout the year, influenced especially by weather conditions and cultural events, such as the Círio de Nazaré. A trend of price appreciation over time was observed, especially since 2020, possibly associated with the diversification of jambu uses in cooking, food, cosmetics, and beverage industries. The results also indicated that jambu flower production constitutes a niche market that yields higher profits per plot for the product, even with higher costs and the need for skilled labor.
